Report Highlights

 

  • Venture capitalists invested $9.9 billion in 1,023 deals in the 3Q14 in the U.S.. This was the sixth consecutive quarter of more than 1,000 companies receiving venture capital investment in a single quarter.
  • In San Diego, venture capitalists invested $238.5 million in 27 deals in the 3Q14 compared to $235.4 million in 28 deals at the same time a year ago (3Q13). Quarterly VC investment activity increased 1% in terms of dollars compared to the 2Q14.
  • The Biotechnology industry received the highest level of funding of 9 industries in San Diego, capturing $145.2 million in the 3Q14.

  • San Diego Office Snapshot & Statistics by Submarket – Direct vacancy, excluding sublease space, was 14.6% in 3Q14 compared to 15.5% in 2Q14.
  • U.S. Office Market Report – Market absorbed 22.2 million SF of space in the 3Q14, a 31% increase compared to the previous quarter and a 50% increase compared to last year.  
  • San Diego Industrial Snapshot & Statistics by Submarket – Total vacancy, including sublease space, for all product types has reached 7.1%, a level not seen in 13 years.
  • U.S. Industrial Market Report –  Market absorbed 41.6 million SF, the second strongest reading since record keeping began in 1993.

Report Highlights

  • San Diego’s unemployment rate has decreased 510 bps since its peak rate of 11.0% recorded in January 2010 to 5.9% in September 2014 and is 10 bps above the  24-yr. monthly average of 6.1%.
  • Between September 2013 and September  2014, San Diego County added 33,300 jobs, an annual increase of 2.5%.
  • Professional and business services recorded the greatest year-over gain, adding 9,300 jobs followed by four other industries recording  gains.
  • Since the end of the recession in June 2009, San Diego has added 116,600 jobs, 35,100 jobs more compared to 81,500 lost during the last recession.
